PROFESSIONAL BIO
Barry Miettinen is
a PMI certified Project Management Professional with a Mechanical
Engineering degree from the University of Waterloo. He has worked with
information technology since the late-1970’s and has been actively
managing IT related projects since 1985.
With a solid
background in business management, Mr. Miettinen moves seamlessly
between corporate stakeholders and IT professionals, skillfully
bridging the gap between business needs and technological solutions.
Mr. Miettinen takes a broad view of company priorities and translates
corporate vision into the context of his projects.
Mr. Miettinen began
his IT career in 1981 working for Ontario Hydro (now Hydro One)
Research Division as a programmer/computer simulation specialist.
After spending several years working hands-on in IT he transitioned
into management, eventually assuming the de facto role of IT Project
Manager.
Between 1990 and
1995 Mr. Miettinen led two logistically complex, multi-phase
province-wide IT initiatives for Ontario Hydro. These high profile
projects involved multiple project, IT, user, and management teams;
senior level IT Strategy Committees; large multi-year budgets; and
large outsourcing contracts. Both projects were deemed highly
successful, exceeding all performance targets and financial
expectations.
In 1996 Mr.
Miettinen combined his business acumen with his technical skills and
began consulting as an IT Project Manager. His first contract involved
guiding a national inventory firm through an enterprise-wide business
process review and technology assessment, subsequently moving the
company from traditional technologies to state-of-the-art
infrastructure, telecommunications, and enterprise systems.
From 1998 to 2001,
contracted by an international human resources consulting firm and
working closely with the CIO, Mr. Miettinen managed a diverse
portfolio of large IT projects for clients across a range of business
sectors. Here Mr. Miettinen honed his ability to manage multiple
projects, hold in-house and client-side project management roles, and
to quickly assess and adapt to changing client requirements.
Mr. Miettinen’s
experience between 2001 and 2004 involved a diverse array of clients and
projects including: planning and defining the development of an
integrated CRM solution for a major auto manufacturer; providing IT
expertise to a facilities design firm to develop their response to a
government RFP; implementing a software release cycle for a
telecommunications provider; and formulating short- and long-term
electronic services delivery strategies for an IT professional
outsourcing company.
In 2004, in
response to a merger and acquisition between two telecoms, Mr.
Miettinen managed the planning, development and implementation for the
migration and consolidation of the acquired company’s business Tier 1
internet division.
In 2006, Mr.
Miettinen was brought in to take over the management of a large
multi-year helpdesk and desktop outsourcing initiative for a leading
international financial services organization.
Mr. Miettinen
delivers project results that merge the business goals of the company
with technological solutions.
